The final Space Shuttle has gone silent forever. The breath of this vivid machine has ceased for all times to come. A machine that is so much more than that, over the last 30 years it became a living being. A living being that is loved, cherished and worshiped by two generations.
The Space Shuttle inspired thousands of people. Many of today’s Technicians, Engineers or Scientists are what they are because of this vehicle. The Shuttle, a machine, had the ability to change lives. People attending a launch changed; experiencing the biggest marvel created in our time influenced lives, history and the world. In fact, the Space Shuttle changed everything.
Today, a 30-year era comes to a final stopping sign, a line in the sand in scientific and human history. A chapter in exploration and dedication is being closed. An amazing workforce is lost. People devoted their lives to a program that became much more than that. They made sacrifices that one can only imagine. We can not thank those people enough for all that they have given, for all that they made possible and for the love they expressed when going to work each and every day. We also have to thank their families that made sacrifices as well. We have to thank them for showing us what humans can do, what we can do.
Future Generations will look back at the Space Shuttle. It will stand out as one of the greatest achievements that mankind has ever made.
" It has often proved true that the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow." – Robert Goddard
Today, we face the end. The legacy of the Space Shuttle will orbit the earth for years to come. A legacy of unsurpassed achievement, the International Space Station.
Today, we are filled with sadness, bitterness or even anger. These emotions can not be raised by a machine. The Space Shuttle has taken a place deep inside our hearts. But we also have to feel pride, Triumph and Thankfulness.
For more than 30 years, the Shuttle was also the heart of NASA. The Government Agency was also influenced by the Space Shuttle; it changed because of the Shuttle. NASA opened up its doors and invited the people to be a part of the amazing journey that brought us to this day.
"The shuttle is always going to be a reflection of what this nation can do when it dares to be bold and commits to follow through. We're not ending the journey today; we're completing a chapter of a journey that will never end." – Christopher Ferguson
We will never forget
Columbia
Challenger
Discovery
Atlantis
Endeavour.
We’re behind you!
And we always will be….
“Don’t cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.”
