Russia will resume its Interplanetary Space Program with the Launch of Phobos-Grunt after two decades
of funding problems and mission failures. Phobos Grunt (=Soil) will put a
spacecraft into Orbit around Mars and make a landing on Phobos, one of the two
Martian Moons, collect samples and leave Mars for a return trip to Earth. This
is the first Mission to return a sample from Phobos. Russia already attempted
Landings on Phobos, but the mission failed in 1988. Another problem on a Mars
Mission ended the Interplanetary Space Program in 1996. The Mission is
considered high risk, but will return unprecedented science data if successful.
