ISS Expedition 30 Section

Picture
Photo: NASA
__ This Photo that was taken by the International Space Station Expedition 30 Crew on March 28, 2012 shows the Russian Capital’s City Lights as the Space Station made a night pass over the area. In the foreground, one of the Space Station’s Solar Arrays can be seen. A busy night-time scene has been captured in the background. To the right, the different layers of Earth’s Atmosphere are visible as daylight passes through. The Aurora Borealis is also visible in the picture. The green color is caused by Oxygen Emissions while blue and purple are caused by Nitrogen Atoms. A small sample of Airglow can be seen one the left side of the image. The faint orange/gold line of Airglow is caused by ultraviolet radiation exciting gas molecules in the upper portion of the atmosphere. Also visible in the background is a star-filled sky.
