GRAIL’s
Education and Public outreach campaign targets students, especially
middle-school girls and under-represented minorities.
GRAIL MoonKAM (Moon Knowledge Acquired by Middle School Students) is the leading E/PO aspect of the GRAIL Mission. Led by Dr. Sally Ride, America’s first woman in space, it will engage middle school students all across the US. Fifth- to eighth-grade students will be able to select areas of the Moon and send requests to the MoonKAM Operations Center. Images and video will be taken by 5 camera heads on each of the spacecraft. Those cameras can take images of the lunar surface, Earth, Deep Space and the GRAIL Spacecraft itself. Students will receive the images and study lunar features.
This project is similar to EarthKAM on the GRACE Spacecraft that has given teachers and students the opportunity of requesting Earth Photography. An E/PO camera is also a part of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
